This species has rapidly colonised the UK since its introduction and has reduced the numbers of the native Swan mussel where it has become established. Due to its population density and its filter feeding it can make waters very clear. It may be impossible to eradicate although work is being carried out on selective pathogens for its control. It grows to 35mm in length and lives in dense colonies that may comprise of hundreds of thousands of individuals. |
