Green Spruce Aphid

Elatobium abietinum

Description:
Facts:

This Aphid which is wingless in its adult form measures between 1 & 2mm in length. It causes much damage in plantations of Spruce where it can kill off the needles by the act of sucking the trees sap. It is only a severe problem when numbers reach very high densities, typically after a mild winter. With the greater incidence of mild winters it is becoming an increasing problem.
Spraying is not a practical proposition because of environmental concerns and it is hoped that a biological form of control can be found.
