First introduced in Poole harbour in the late 1970s this has spread to many areas of the south coast. It is a fast growing species that causes problems by entangling the props of motor vessels and blocking seawater intakes. It also causes problems by lifting of the seabed substrate. It has buoyant capsules and when these get too buoyant they can lift the attached substrate and drift off with it. |
